Right now is a super common time to fall prey to staying in bed when you should get up for those early morning workouts or eating a few to many of the holiday baked goodies. All the more reason to give yourself a huge helping of motivation to keep you on track with your health and fitness goals. Here are my top 5 strategies to help “git ‘er done!”
1. Re-evaluate your goals. Why are you trying to get fit in the first place? Is it because you want to be a healthy example for your children? Do you want to regain the active lifestyle you lived in your 30’s? Or do you simply enjoy the way exercise makes you feel and all the associated benefits? Whatever the case, remembering why we are trying to make changes in our life can help redirect our focus on what is really important. Goals should always be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Framed.
2. Find a Partner/s in Crime. Enrolling another person in the journey towards fitness can help us stay committed and add a little more fun to our workouts. Try scheduling social events around an activity. For example, instead of grabbing a cup of coffee with a friend go on a long, heart pumping walk. Take advantage of family in town for the holidays, head down to the park and start a game of pick up basketball. Not only is this a great way to add general activity to your daily lifestyle but you would be surprised how much it benefits your personal relationships!
3. Try Something New. With the winter closely upon us, sometimes it seems like opportunities are dwindling for new workout ideas. However there are numerous activities to be explored! First of all, take advantage of our mild fall and check out a new hiking trail or go on a bike ride. Then there are the somewhat obvious winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, but you can also head down to the local ski shop and pick up snowshoes that will burn major calories for less than 20 bucks a day! Feeling chilly? Try Bikram Yoga, you don’t even know the meaning of sweat until you’ve tried out these classes. If you need a kick in the pants specifically when it comes to your workouts, hire a Personal Trainer, the most efficient way to get to your goals (shameless plug, i know
). Last but not least, check out the City of Reno recreation programs. Adding diversity can do wonders for boredom, right now I am playing volleyball and I can’t think of a better way to get in my exercise than Sunday volleyball.
4. Download New Music. Just like we get sick of doing the same old workout routine, listening to the same music over and over will make you want to quit before you even start. Downloading some new music to listen to while working out can inspire you to up the pace on your cardio or finish that last repetition that you may have not be able to achieve before.
5. Sign Up for an Event. Making a commitment ahead of time by signing up for an event can help you establish a concrete goal and will also motivate you to stay on track with your health and fitness. Sign up for a 10K or half marathon right here in Reno or make a trip out of it and plan a race along the coast or even Hawaii! Having a deadline will make sure you stay on a direct path towards your goals and gives you a sense of accomplishment. If you need that extra commitment to make sure you get your workouts in check out Reno Running and Fitness, they are an absolutely awesome running group and I couldn’t have enough nice things to say about them!
So there are my top 5 ways to git ‘er done! Just because it’s cold outside winter doesn’t have to be a time when you put your goals on hold, just look for new ways to achieve them!
